Revitalise Our Places Oamaru

Turning Vacant into Vibrant

About the Programme

How it Works

Vacant space programmes around the world are designed to bring life back to the areas in which buildings and space are unused and underutilised. These programmes highlight people making and presenting original items, ideas, concepts and interactions with their pop-ups.  Project considerations include cultural, social, creative, economic needs in community.  Waitaki District Council has approved this programme for Oamaru.

As a broker programme, we match vacant spaces between property owners and people from the community, like artists, community groups and business start-ups. The projects placed in shop fronts are interesting enough to attract people to the CBD and to work towards behaviour changes that continue to bring people back repeatedly.   The projects need to have a benefit for the community and be an asset to the street.  It is key that projects have a point of difference from existing businesses and are preferably created locally with a level of uniqueness which would not be found in a suburban shopping centre or mass produced.

This programme is designed to encourage innovative ideas and new initiatives, while staging vacant properties for the owners to attract long-term lease agreements.
